The Zamfara State Police Command says it has swiftly neutralized a security threat along the Kaura Namoda–Moriki Road following a suspected landmine explosion on Sunday.
In a statement issued in Gusau, the Command said its Violence Crime Response Unit, VCRU, and Explosive Ordnance Disposal, EOD, personnel were immediately deployed after receiving credible intelligence.
“On 17th August 2026, at approximately 1430 hours, the Command received credible intelligence indicating that armed bandits had planted suspected Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs, and landmines along the road,” the statement said.
According to the police, one of the devices detonated shortly afterwards when a vehicle reportedly drove over it.
“Fortunately, no life was lost and no injury was sustained in the incident,” the statement added.
The Command explained that a combined team of VCRU operatives and EOD experts moved to the scene for immediate action. “While the EOD personnel confirmed that the detonated device was a locally fabricated landmine, a comprehensive search of the surrounding area was subsequently conducted,” the statement said.
It added that “the entire location was successfully swept and declared safe.” To ensure smooth movement, the police said the damaged portions of the road were repaired. “To further enhance the safety of motorists and commuters, the affected potholes and portions of the roadway were filled with cement, allowing normal vehicular movement to resume,” the statement noted.
The Commissioner of Police, Zamfara State Command, CP A.M. Bello, PSC+, MNIPS, CCNP, urged residents to remain security conscious and cooperate with law enforcement.
“I call on members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly provide credible information on suspicious activities or objects to the police and other security agencies,” CP Bello said.
He also warned residents against handling suspicious objects. “Members of the public are equally advised not to touch, approach or tamper with any suspected explosive device, but to immediately alert security personnel,” he added.

The statement was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, ANIPR, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police.
