About 15 commuters are feared to have lost their lives following a fire incident involving a passenger vehicle on the Enagi–Kontagora Duma Sharp Bend in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.

The incident was said to have occurred in the early hours of Saturday, August 8, 2026. Eyewitness accounts indicated that the occupants were unable to escape before the vehicle was consumed by fire.

Ahmed Ndagana, a witness at the scene, told our correspondent that the vehicle went up in flames near the notorious bend.  "We arrived shortly after the fire started at the sharp corner. By the time residents got there, the vehicle was already burning with people inside. We suspect that about 15 people died in the inferno," Ndagana said.

According to him, the remains were interred in a mass burial in accordance with Islamic injunctions due to the extent of the damage. "Because of the nature of what happened, the bodies were given a mass burial in line with Islamic rites," Ndagana explained.

The cause of the fire has not been established. The type of vehicle and the identities of the victims are yet to be ascertained as of the time of filing this report. Ndagana urged road users to be vigilant while navigating the axis, particularly during the rainy season.

"Drivers should be very careful on this road, especially at the Duma sharp bend and when it rains. This spot has recorded several accidents," he warned.

Attempts to reach officials of the Niger State Police Command and other relevant agencies for confirmation were unsuccessful at press time.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident, and the casualty figure remains unverified.
