Two -Storey Building Collapses In Sokoto, Workers Escape Unhurt

By Our Correspondent, SokotoSOKOTO - Panic gripped traders and residents along Bauchi Road in Sokoto metropolis on Wednesday afternoon after a two-storey building under construction caved in. No life was lost in the incident.  The collapse occurred at about 2:00 p.m. and drew emergency responders and onlookers to the site within minutes.

Confirming the development, the Head of NEMA Sokoto Operations Office, Alhaji Tukur Abubakar, said his team was among the first responders at the scene.  “We thank God that no life was lost and no casualty was recorded in this incident,” Alhaji Abubakar told journalists.

“All the workers on site managed to escape when they noticed the structure was giving way. As of now, no person is trapped under the rubble,” he added.

The NEMA official said other agencies joined in the rescue and safety operation. “Personnel from the Federal Fire Service, Sokoto State Fire Service, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society were on ground. We also had officials from the Sokoto State Ministries of Environment, Lands and Housing, as well as SEMA,” he said.

According to him, the immediate priority was to secure the area. “We quickly mobilized to cordon off the site to prevent a secondary collapse and to keep members of the public away from danger,” Alhaji Abubakar stated.

He said investigations would be carried out to determine what led to the collapse. “The findings of our thorough investigation will reveal the real cause of this building collapse,” he noted.

Building collapses have continued to raise concerns across Nigeria, with many cases resulting in deaths and destruction of property.  Experts in the construction sector have repeatedly called for strict adherence to building codes and stronger regulatory oversight to check the trend.

Authorities urged developers in Sokoto and other parts of the state to ensure that only certified professionals handle construction works and that due process is followed at every stage.
