The Katsina Emirate Council has conferred the prestigious traditional title of Garkuwan Katsina Babba, meaning Grand Defender of Katsina, on Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu.

The honour is in recognition of his contributions to national development and exemplary leadership. The approval was conveyed to the Governor on Friday by a delegation sent by the Emir of Katsina, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Abdulmumin Kabir Usman. The delegation comprised the Secretary to the Emirate, Alhaji Isa Alikankiya, and Prince Abdulmumin Kabir Usman. Presenting the letter of conferment, Alikankiya said the decision followed careful consideration of Governor Idris's record in public service and leadership. "The Emir of Katsina carefully considered Governor Idris's contributions to national development, his leadership initiatives and reports of his activities and public service before approving the conferment of the title," Alikankiya said.

He explained that the decision was reached after consultations and deliberations with members of the Emirate Council, who unanimously found the Governor deserving of the honour. Alikankiya added that the Emir has requested the Governor to indicate his availability for the formal turbaning ceremony. "The Emir has asked the Governor to communicate his availability and readiness for the formal turbaning ceremony, following which the Emirate would make the necessary arrangements," he said.

Responding, Governor Idris described the conferment as a great honour to himself, the government and people of Kebbi State. He said being considered worthy of such a revered title by one of Nigeria's most historic traditional institutions was a source of pride. "Being considered worthy of such a prestigious traditional title by one of Nigeria's historic and highly respected traditional institutions is a source of immense pride and a memorable milestone in my public service career," Governor Idris said.

The Governor expressed profound appreciation to the Emir for the confidence reposed in him. "I express profound appreciation to the Emir of Katsina for the confidence reposed in me, praying Almighty Allah to grant the royal father good health, long life and continued wisdom," he said.

Idris attributed the honour to the positive reports of his administration's developmental strides and thanked traditional rulers within and outside Nigeria for their goodwill, prayers and support. He assured the delegation that he would personally visit the Emir's palace in Katsina to convey his appreciation formally. "I will personally visit the Emir's palace in Katsina to formally convey my appreciation and I request the delegation to extend my gratitude and best wishes to the Emir," he said.

The Governor noted that the title would further strengthen the longstanding bond of friendship and cooperation between Kebbi State and the Katsina Emirate. "This honour will further strengthen the longstanding bonds of friendship, mutual respect and cooperation between Kebbi State and the Katsina Emirate," Idris added.
