The Kebbi State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has strongly condemned the outbreak of violence in Jega Local Government Area, calling on security agencies to carry out a detailed investigation and ensure justice.
The party's position was made known during a press briefing held in Birnin Kebbi on Sunday by its State Publicity Secretary, Isah Assalafi. Assalafi said the party received the report of the disturbance with serious concern, adding that no act of lawlessness should be tolerated under any guise.
He said, "The All Progressives Congress in Kebbi State has observed the violence and destruction that occurred in parts of Jega. We see it as a grave development that needs immediate, comprehensive and unbiased investigation. The APC condemns every form of violence, destruction of property and intimidation, regardless of political leaning or social status of those involved."
He described Jega as a community known for peaceful coexistence and vibrant political participation, noting that the action of a few should not be used to label the entire town as violent.
According to him, "Jega has a long history of active political involvement and communal harmony. The conduct of a few individuals should not be allowed to define the character of the people of Jega or disrupt the peace the area is known for."
Assalafi warned that democracy allows for healthy contest, but political differences should never result in bloodshed or destruction of property.
"Political competition is part of democracy, but it must not slide into violence, intimidation or physical confrontation. To be clear, political disagreement is not an excuse for criminal behaviour. Democracy does not support violence, and no political ambition warrants the loss of lives or property," he emphasized.
He advised politicians, their supporters and other stakeholders to avoid provocative utterances and false information that could further inflame the situation, urging them to embrace lawful and democratic means of resolving disputes.
He further stated, "Violence should never be an alternative to political debate. When there are disagreements, the proper way is through dialogue and legitimate democratic processes."
The APC spokesman lauded security operatives, traditional institutions, community leaders and residents who contributed to the restoration of peace in the area, urging them to sustain vigilance. While calling for an open and evidence-based inquiry, he stressed that accountability should not be influenced by political pressure or hearsay.
"We commend the security agencies and community leaders for bringing the situation under control. We urge continued vigilance and a transparent investigation. Responsibility must be established on the basis of facts, not speculation or party affiliation," Assalafi added.
He said the APC sympathizes with those who lost property and other valuables during the incident and assured that the administration of Governor Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, remains committed to protecting lives and promoting development.
Assalafi called on security agencies to prosecute all those implicated without showing favour to anyone, and challenged political parties to caution their supporters against thuggery.
"We urge security agencies to act firmly, investigate diligently and prosecute anyone found culpable according to the law. No person should be shielded because of political connection or influence. Political parties and their leaders must also take charge of their followers and openly condemn political thuggery," he said.
He urged residents of Jega and the entire state not to allow political differences to destroy communal bonds, and enjoined them to shun incitement and promptly report suspicious activities.
He said, "To the people of Jega and Kebbi State, we appeal that you should not let political differences split your communities or allow violence to erode the peace we have collectively built. Do not allow yourselves to be used for destruction, disregard inflammatory messages and report any suspicious act to the relevant authorities." "To political actors, compete with ideas, convince the people with your achievements and programmes, and abide by democratic rules. Do not pursue political gain through violence or disorder," he added.
Assalafi reiterated that the APC will continue to support lawful initiatives aimed at securing communities and strengthening democratic governance. "The APC will keep supporting every legitimate effort to safeguard lives, secure our communities and sustain democratic participation in Kebbi State.
We will continue to insist that crime remains crime, no matter who commits it. Jega must stay peaceful, Kebbi must stay peaceful, democracy must overcome violence and the law must overcome impunity. Enough of violence and political thuggery. Let us choose peace, obey the law and protect Kebbi State together," he concluded.
