FG Inaugurates Automotive, CNG Training Centre In Kebbi As 100 Youths Graduate

By Umar Faruk

The Federal Government on Thursday inaugurated a National Automotive Training Centre and a Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, Conversion Centre in Birnin Kebbi.
The facilities, sited at the ICT Centre of Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, are expected to equip young people with technical skills and support the transition to cleaner energy in the transport sector.
One hundred youths graduated from the maiden training programme in mechatronics and CNG vehicle conversion at the event.
The Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Sen. John Owan Enoh, who inaugurated the centre, said it reflects government’s commitment to industrial growth, skills development and economic diversification.
“This is not just about commissioning a building,” Enoh said.  “It represents the start of new opportunities for innovation, technical training, entrepreneurship, job creation and sustainable economic growth for Kebbi State and the entire North-West region.”
He described Kebbi as a state with strategic economic importance, citing its contributions to rice production, fisheries, solid minerals and inland water transportation.
The minister also noted the international profile of the state through the Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival.
“Kebbi is globally recognized through the Argungu Festival, one of Africa’s oldest cultural events,” he said.  “It continues to promote tourism, culture and economic activities not only for the state but for the country at large.”
Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State said the establishment of the centre aligns with federal efforts to accelerate industrialization and empower youths.
The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Sen. Umar Abubakar-Tafida, said the facility would prepare young Nigerians for modern demands in the automotive industry.
“This centre will provide our youths with modern skills in automotive diagnostics, maintenance and CNG conversion,” Abubakar-Tafida said.  “These are critical competencies needed in today’s evolving transportation sector.”
He added that the initiative would reduce unemployment and position Kebbi youths to benefit from opportunities in the green energy economy.
Officials said the centre is part of a broader federal programme to establish technical training and CNG conversion hubs across the country.
The aim, according to the ministry, is to boost local capacity, promote cleaner fuel usage, and create jobs in the automotive value chain.
Stakeholders at the event welcomed the project and called for sustained funding and equipment support to ensure its long-term impact.
