AFUSTA Acting VC Resigns, Cites"Lack Of Independence", Institutional Challenges

By Umar Faruk

The Acting Vice Chancellor of Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology, Aliero, AFUSTA, Prof. Ismaila A. Mungadi, has resigned from office, citing inability to discharge his mandate “with the independence, effectiveness and institutional harmony” required.
In a resignation letter dated Thursday, 28th August 2026 and addressed to the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Mungadi said his decision takes effect from Friday, 28th August 2026.

Prof. Mungadi, an Ag. Vice-Chancellor with qualifications including MBBS, FRCS, FWACS, Fameds, and Cert. Endourol, said he accepted the appointment with a clear mandate to stabilize the University, strengthen governance, and restore academic integrity. “I accepted the appointment with a clear understanding of the mandate entrusted to me: to stabilize the University, strengthen its governance processes, restore confidence and academic integrity, and facilitate its transition to substantive leadership,” he wrote.

He noted that significant progress was made during his short tenure. “Since assuming office, I have devoted myself fully to this responsibility. Working with members of the University community and other stakeholders, we have made considerable progress within the relatively short period available,” he stated.

The Acting VC also expressed gratitude to the Kebbi State Government for the opportunity to serve.
“I remain deeply grateful to His Excellency the Executive Governor of Kebbi State, Dr Nasir Idris for the confidence reposed in me and for the opportunity to serve the University and Kebbi State in this capacity,” he said.

However, Prof. Mungadi said recent developments had hampered his ability to lead effectively. “However, developments in recent weeks have increasingly made it difficult for me to discharge the mandate with the independence, effectiveness and institutional harmony that I believe are necessary for its successful accomplishment,” he explained.

According to him, he made efforts to resolve the challenges through appropriate structures but found it untenable to continue.  “I have made sincere efforts to work through the appropriate structures and to seek resolution of the emerging challenges. Regrettably, I have come to the considered conclusion that, under the prevailing circumstances, I may no longer be able to satisfactorily accomplish the objectives for which I accepted the appointment,” he said.

The professor said staying on would not serve the institution’s interest.  “For me, remaining in office when I am unable to effectively discharge the mandate entrusted to me would not be in the best interest of the University. I therefore consider resignation the most appropriate course of action,” he wrote.
He added that the decision was not taken lightly and reaffirmed his commitment to the University.  “This decision has not been taken lightly. I remain deeply committed to the progress of Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology and to the educational and developmental goals of Kebbi State,” he stated.

As at press time, the Governing Council and the Kebbi State Government had not issued an official statement on the resignation or on arrangements for the appointment of a substantive Vice Chancellor.

AFUSTA, located in Aliero, is one of Kebbi State’s foremost science and technology institutions and has been undergoing leadership transition in recent months.
