ZARIA - Ahmadu Bello University, ABU Zaria, has distributed 3,000 tree seedlings to communities as part of its campaign to promote environmental conservation and climate resilience.
The exercise formed part of activities marking this year’s World Environment Day, a symposium, and a tree planting campaign held on the university campus.
The Chancellor of the University, Professor Adamu Ahmed, disclosed this during the event.
“We have set aside three thousand tree seedlings for distribution to host communities and other stakeholders to encourage tree planting,” Professor Ahmed said.
“This is our contribution to restoring the ecosystem and building a healthier environment for present and future generations,” he added.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Professor Bello Sabo, said the university management was taking concrete steps to institutionalize environmental protection.
“The management has approved the establishment of an Environmental Unit that will be saddled with the responsibility of handling all environmental matters within the university,” Professor Sabo stated.
“We are committed to ensuring that ABU leads by example in environmental sustainability,” he noted.
In his address, the Chairman of the occasion and Chairman of the Kaduna State Local Government Service Board, Professor Aminu Ladan Sharehu, described environmental protection as a collective duty.
“Environmental challenges affect all of us, and the solutions must also come from all of us,” Professor Sharehu said.
“The Local Government Service Board and the 23 Local Government Areas in Kaduna State remain committed to working with institutions like ABU and other stakeholders to safeguard our environment and sustain livelihoods,” he added.
He further stressed the long-term benefits of afforestation.
“Planting trees is not just an activity, it is an investment for a safe and sustainable tomorrow. It also supports socio-economic development by protecting agriculture, water sources, and public health,” the Chairman explained.
This year’s World Environment Day was marked under the theme: “Inspired by Nature: Ecosystem Restoration for a Resilient, Adaptable and Sustainable Microclimate in ABU.”
The event drew participants from government and environmental agencies, including officials of the Kaduna State Ministry of Environment and the State Project Coordinator of ACReSAL.
