SOKOTO - After three and a half decades in service, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 10, AIG Gyogon Augustine Grimah, has pulled out of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Zone 10 Headquarters in Sokoto confirmed the development in a statement issued on Saturday, noting that the 24th AIG to lead the zone formally retired on Friday, 1st August 2026.  AIG Grimah hails from Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. He joined the Force in *May 1992 as a Cadet ASP following his training at the Police Academy Annex in Kaduna.

He is a graduate of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he obtained a B.Sc in Chemistry, and also holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration.  According to the citation released by the Command, the retiring officer had a career that cut across operations, investigations, and administration.  He served with the Patrol and Guard Unit in Enugu, was Unit Commander and later Second-in-Command at 27 PMF in Katsina, and headed the Sabon Gari Division in Katsina as DPO.

He also worked as an investigator with the Special Fraud Unit at FCID Abuja, and served as a Staff Officer at the Force Headquarters.  At the senior management level, he was Commandant of Police Secondary School, Calabar, and later Commandant of Police Boys Secondary School, Mani, Katsina.

He also served as ACP in charge of Training in Katsina, Head of X-Squad at FCID Abuja, and ACP SCID in Plateau before his elevation to Deputy Commissioner of Police.

As DCP, Grimah held the positions of Force Provost Marshal, Deputy Commissioner CID in Enugu, and Deputy Commissioner Operations in Ekiti.  He was subsequently promoted to AIG and posted to head Zone 10, with supervisory responsibility over Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states.

The Command said the senior officer participated in several professional trainings, including Combat Operations Course in Gwoza, Junior and Intermediate Command Courses at the Police Staff College Jos, Strategic Leadership and Command Course, and UN Peacekeeping courses.

“He also participated in seminars and workshops both within Nigeria and abroad,” the statement added.
In his valedictory speech to officers and men, the outgoing AIG expressed appreciation to the Force leadership. “I express my profound gratitude to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, for the strategic support I enjoyed throughout my tour of duty,” Grimah said.

He also acknowledged the support of the state governments and residents under his watch. “I extend my deepest appreciation to the governments and good people of Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara States for their unwavering partnership and cooperation,” he said.

The Command noted that throughout his tenure, AIG Grimah championed professionalism, respect for human rights, and synergy among security agencies. "His leadership led to a significant drop in crime across the zone, strengthened community policing, and improved the operational capacity of officers under his command,” the statement said.

The Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Faruk A. Ambursa, described the retirement as the end of an era. “As he wraps up this remarkable chapter of his policing career, AIG Gyogon Augustine Grimah leaves behind a legacy that will inspire current and future generations of police officers,” ASP Ambursa stated.

The Command offered prayers for the retiree as he moves on to the next phase of life. “We wish him God’s guidance, sound health, fulfilment and success in all his future endeavours. May his record of honour, excellence and selfless service continue to inspire,” the statement concluded.
